Mom was a fun loving, outgoing lady who loved life and people and brought much happiness to family, friends and even new acquaintances she made. Many of the young people she met over the years called her Mom. Everyone was welcome in her home and anytime one stopped by, she wanted to feed them and could whip up a delicious meal in no time. She remained young at heart until the very end. Before moving to Bakersfield 6 years ago where she had lived from 1945-1961, and where three of her children now live, she resided in Ventura for over 40 years. While living there in the early 80s, she was one of the first volunteers with Food Share. She helped glean the fields and performed any other job that was necessary to help feed hungry people. She retired because of problems with her hip and was replaced by her husband who became very involved. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd, Jr.; daughter, Sheryl Almstrom; infant daughter, Carol; her parents, Robert and Emma Redman, and five siblings. Left to cherish her memory is: daughter, Sonya Nelson and husband Chuck; son, Larry Hughes and wife Ginger, all of Bakersfield; daughter Brenda Borum and husband Rex, of Ventura; grandchildren: Lori OConnell, Teri Coddington, Staci Akery, Chuck Nelson, Alyson Sandoval, Amy LaBrie, Jamie Hughes and Larry Hughes and their spouses; great- grandchildren: Chelsea and Daniel O'Connell, Jessica and Allie Akery, Taylor and Nathan Coddington, Makaela Martin, Grant Nelson, Megan Sandoval, and Ella and Lili LaBrie who loved and will miss Nanny. The family would like to express special appreciation to Laura of Hoffman Hospice who provided Mom with loving care, Bucky Hussain and his staff at Silvercrest Manor: Alicia, Tornicia, Philicia, Linnecia, Tracie, Linda, Frances, and Sally who not only provided Mom with excellent care, but comforted, cried with, encouraged, and even fed us last week. We will cherish your love and memories, sweet Mom. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 11/9/2005.
