He spent his childhood on the family farm in the mountains of North Georgia and lived in Ohio periodically from 1916 to 1919. He left home to "seek his fortune" at age 16. His father objected to his first job working on the railroad. He then found work on a celery farm in Ohio. In 1926 he visited his sister and brother-in-law, Blanche and Evan Payne, in Taft, California. His first job in the oilfields was with the Honolulu Oil Company. He attended automobile school in Akron, Ohio and returned to Taft in 1928 having married Amy Payne, his wife of 60 years who predeceased him in 1988. On September 11, 1928 he took a job as a roustabout at the Belridge Oil Company. He moved his family to the Belridge Oil Lease in 1945. He liked his work and his family liked Belridge. He retired from Belridge in 1971 as Field Manager and he and Amy moved back to Taft. Several years after his retirement he returned to work for Belridge as a drilling consultant until the company was sold to Shell Oil, in 1979. After that, he continued to consult on drilling projects with Bob Crozier. He is survived by his sister, Grace of Blairsville, Georgia; his daughter, Barbara of Los Angeles; his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Andy Thomas of Alexander City, Alabama; his grandchildren, Susan Reeds Taylor, Hunt Thomas, James Reeds, Kitty Thomas Bingham, Jean Reeds Cook and James Thomas and nine great- grandchildren. A graveside service was held Wednesday, January 18, at West Side District Cemetery, in Taft. Any contributions to the West Kern Oil Museum in Taft would be appreciated.
