Bill was born on September 18, 1916, in Prescott, Arkansas and grew up in Texas and Arkansas. While working on the farm with horses and mules, he became an expert horseman and mule skinner. In 1943, while hauling ammunition from the depot to ships at Bremerton, Washington for the U.S. Navy, he received his draft notice. Instead of taking advantage of his status of being in a job that was vital to the war effort, and despite having a wife and small child, he volunteered for the Army and wound up in the First Cavalry Division, 134th Horse Regiment. They were posted to Lido, Burma in early 1944. Almost immediately they were attached to the 5037th Composite Group which later became known as Merrells Marauders. This Arkansas country boy marched 1000 miles with his mule across the mountains and jungles of India and Burma to re- open the Burma Road and twice retake the airfield at Michnya. He was awarded the China, Burma, India Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and The Distinguished Unit citation. He won the Expert Marksmanship Medal (colt .45 automatic on horseback). After his discharge, Bill married Aline Clifton and they would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2005. He recently received his sixty-year pin from Carpenters Local 743, AFL-CIO. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing, hunting and was a California Champion Horseman in the parade category. Bill died, fighting like the trooper he was, on June 21, 2005, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife, Aline Hannah; his son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Barbara Hannah; his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Christine and Andy Jaeger; his granddaughter and grandson-in- law, Annette and Tom Callahan; his grandson, Mark Hannah and family; his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Mary and Ramon Cuevas. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends. Visitation will be from 4:00 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
