The daughter of Charles Wesley Hayes and Florence Hirons Hayes, both born in Illinois, she came west with her family in 1916 and settled in Bakersfield where she grew up and met Freal. She was the daughter of a truck-driver and sister to four more. Her sister Lerelle and she remained close during all their lives. She graduated from Kern County High School in 1931 and Bakersfield College in 1968. She married Freal in 1935 and helped him and his brother Dick and his wife Twila build their first houses. Twila was her other sister, and they remained fast friends until Twilas death in 2002. She and Freal raised their three sons, Dave, Steve and Tim in Bakersfield. She enjoyed dancing, playing golf, gardening, painting, walking, camping, family sing-alongs and was an ardent life-long reader. She and her men always looked forward to the annual camping trips to Bass Lake and Huntington Lake in the Central Sierra Nevada; and she was proud of having made two backpack trips into the High Sierra; one to Evolution Valley and the other to the Mosquito Lakes. Even in her sixties and seventies, she was a formidable hill-walker, many times forcing her sons and their wives to ?scamper to keep up with Mom. She sold real estate out of Freals real estate brokerage, where she was my favorite salesman, as he puts it. She also served as a caseworker for the Kern County Welfare Office. When they retired, they moved to their dream house in Cambria, on the coast. Later they lived a few years in Rossmore, near Walnut Creek. She and Freal moved to McKinleyville in 1993, and later to Timber Ridge in Eureka. After her many years in the San Joaquin Valley, she deeply appreciated the coastal climate of Humboldt County. She was the kind of Mom her boys friends envied them for having: beautiful, gracious, good-humored and a wonderful cook. To the end of her life she often expressed her gratitude at being blessed with a loving husband and good children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Freal; her sons and daughters Dave and Carol of McKinleyville, Steve Harvey and Marie Weaver of Atlanta and Tim and Joan of Sacramento; grandchildren, Bruce and Trisha Harvey, Heather and John Yacapraro, Jennifer and Mark Elzey, Brian and Lisa Harvey, Chris Harvey and Ian Sampson; 15 nieces and nephews; 3 great-grandchildren, Corina, Zackary and Zane Harvey; and her sister, Lerelle Young of Fresno. No service is planned; family members are gathering informally this week to remember her and to support Freal.
