Mary was born in Tulare on May 11, 1922. She attended Tulare schools and upon graduation applied for the Civil Service. After passing her exams, she moved to Taft with friends and went to work as a PBX operator at Gardner Field. When Gardner Field was closed, she went to work for the Standard Oil Co. where she remained for 12 years. She married Stan Hickle and was a stay-at-home mom for a few years. She returned to work in the Lincoln School cafeteria and later was promoted to the Taft Union High School cafeteria where she remained for 35 years. She truly loved the Taft community and Taft High School. She was also known for her fierce loyalty to the USC Trojans and the Los Angeles Dodgers, as many of her friends can testify. Mary was also known for her beautiful flower gardens filled with roses, camellias and azaleas. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the West Kern Oil Museum. She was a lifetime member of the St. Marys Altar Society. When her health failed, she moved to Bakersfield to live with her daughter and son-in-law until her death on July 18, 2005. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Steve; and by her beloved husband, Stanley Hickle. Her survivors include her son and his wife, Michael Bruce and Rhonda Hickle; her daughter and her husband, Cynthia and Larry Shrewsbury; her granddaughter and her husband, Andria and Dave Hastings and their children, Zane and Kaden; other relatives, Frank and Barbara Lovero of Visalia, Vito and Mary Lovero of Lincoln, Ms. Laura Lovero of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews. The family requests that you wear bright colors to commemorate her life and represent the flowers that she loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary Hickle Scholarship Fund at Taft Union High School, the West Kern Oil Museum, St. Marys Altar Society, the Sacred Heart Altar Society in Bakersfield or to Optimal Hospice. Sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Todd Farrer and to Optimal Hospice for the loving care given to Mary. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
