Mary Catherine Hinton 
May 16, 1926 - April 22, 2005 

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at Grace Assembly of 
God, located at 2800 Larsen St., in Bakersfield, at 10:00 a.m. 

Following several years of successfully holding cancer at bay, Cathy stepped 
from life to life eternal on Saturday, April 22, 2005. A fiercely independent 
woman, she entered the work force upon graduating from high school in her 
hometown of Thorntown, Indiana at a time when the majority of women were 
following the traditional role of homemaker. 

She continued working throughout her life, earning a retirement from Pacific 
Bell and establishing another career as an eligibility worker for the county 
of Kern. Upon her second retirement, Cathy returned to school to pursue an 
interest in American Sign Language, developing a high proficiency in 
communicating with the hearing impaired. She said that the mute had something 
to say and she wanted to hear it. 

For as many years as her health allowed, Cathy traveled to places both 
familiar and unfamiliar for the simple joy of experiencing new territory. It 
was not unusual for her to travel alone to far distances. 

A brief marriage left behind a legacy of one son, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-
grandchildren. She had a deep abiding love for her family, her friends and her 
church family. The sorrow of her loss is balanced by the joy of memories of 
her life and the quiet assurance that she now dwells in the presence of her 
Savior.
