Bruce was born in Bakersfield on March 13, 1942, to George and Velma Hodges. He attended local schools, graduating from East Bakersfield High School and Bakersfield College. Bruce then went on to earn a degree in Accounting from San Jose State University which he leveraged his into a successful 27-year career at Hopper Inc. where he met his wife, Valerie. The past 13 years found Bruce truly enjoying employment with the West Kern Water District family, where he was working as the Assistant General Manager and Director of Finance. He embraced the many challenges of the Water Co., including the Kern River Fan Group and the buying and selling of water. In his spare time Bruce loved playing golf with his Wednesday and Saturday group, his monthly poker game, hunting, fishing, and weekend getaways to Pine Flat. Bruce was also a lifelong automotive enthusiast and competitive racing driver recognized in national publications including Hot Rod Magazine. He was preceded in death by his parents, Geroge and Velma Hodges and his brother-in-law, Martin Valdez. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Valerie Hodges; his brother, David Hodges and sister-in-law, Ruth Hodges; father-in- law, Trini Valdez; mother-in-law, Helen Valdez; and brother-in-law, Dennis Valdez; nephews, John Hodges and his fiancée, Renee Chiang, Matthew Hodges, Martin Valdez Jr., Kenny Valdez and Tim Stone; nieces, Kathy Valdez, Felicia Cross and Melissa Stone. Also, his loyal companion, Simba. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful friends who gave so much comfort and support during this difficult time. Also many thanks go out to the Bakersfield Heart Hospital nursing staff and his team of doctors: Drs. Desai, Vega, and Young. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity or The American Heart Association.
