He watched the city mature and recalled when 24th Street was the outskirts of the community. His mother drove a horse and buggy and was once saved in drama befitting the movies when the horse was spooked, ran away toward the river at Oak Street and a neighbor in another buggy chased them down. He was an inveterate newspaper clipper and followed city developments and events like the earthquakes with scrapbooks and personal diaries from 1939 which he could refer to when a history question came up in the family. He graduated from Kern County Union High School, which became Bakersfield High School, in the Class of 1933 and was one of a handful of alumni at a 70th reunion a couple years ago. He worked in the family business, Hornungs Leather Goods, on 19th Street which his father, an immigrant harness maker from Germany purchased in 1905. Longtime local residents will remember the store with the life-sized horse statue in the front window and the pervasive smell of real leather emanating from the front door. He worked in later years for Pioneer Mercantile, a natural occupation for a man who was always working with his hands. He married Esther Eloise Worthington on January 1, 1941 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a few years before her death in 1996. He is survived by two children, son, Paul Richard Hornung of Bakersfield with wife, Cheryl Jones Hornung and grandchildren, David, Heidi Elizabeth and Jonathan Hornung; and daughter, Sara Jones of Manhattan Beach, California with husband, Maurice Parker Jones, granddaughter, Christina Louise Johnson of Denver, Colorado with husband, John Rumsfeld and great-grandchildren, Evan, Eric and Natalie Rumsfeld; grandson, Eric Brian Johnson of Palm Desert, California; granddaughter, Laura Ann Johnson of Pearland, Texas with husband, Patrick Bridges and great-grandchildren, Alexa, Owen, Sarina and Hollis; stepgranddaughter and husband, Lisa and Juan and Villarroel of Glendora, California and step-great-grand-children, Matthew and Shantel; step-grandson, Maurice Jones, Jr. of Bellflower, California. He was a private man with strong values that harkened back to his fathers roots in Europe. But he also had a joy of life that he shared with anyone who loved a joke or was within earshot of his hearty laugh. He lived in the home of B Street which the family has occupied since 1920 and enjoyed an active healthy life until a brief illness.
