Mar. 19, 10:30 a.m. Ada Miriam Hudspeth was born August 7, 1914 into a Quaker family living in LaHabra, California. She was the fifth of what was to be nine children. She grew up in the home she was born in, attending church and school in Whittier, CA. Ada entered her college years in the middle of the depression but her good mind and strong determination offset her financial hardships and she was able to attended Iowa State College and receive her degree in dietetics. It was there she also met Norman Twisselmann, a Veterinary student. They married April 17, 1938. The war years brought many challenges to Ada as she rationed, moved and gave birth to their five children. When Norman was discharged at the end of the war, he and Ada settled in Bakersfield where Norman practiced as a veterinarian and later operated his cattle business. Norman died at age 47, leaving Ada a widow with her five children to support and educate. Never one to complain or expect special treatment, she rose to the challenge. Throughout the remaining 44 years of her life Ada remained as one of her granddaughters fondly labeled her, "a woman of substance". Ada was smart, understated, thoughtful, industrious, cheery, resourceful and dignified. She loved to laugh and enjoyed the company of many, many people throughout her long life. She was an outstanding cook and a beautiful quilter. Ada was deeply loyal to her friends and family. She considered herself her own best counselor after Norman died and proved to be an excellent one. Never one to like flattery, rather she valued honesty, hard work, simplicity and a good day on Wall Street. Ada always sought what was best for children, especially her own. She lived much of her life alone without the protection and security of a husband and did so without complaint. She achieved great success socially, financially and most particularly in the raising her family; all done with grace and charm. At age 87 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and died on February 26, 2005 in Portland, OR, at age 90. She was deeply loved by her surviving children; N Fred Twisselmann of Bakersfield, Adele Rich of Elkton, OR, Kenneth L Twisselmann of Rocklin, CA, Evelyn Petty of Portland, OR, Kathy Moore of Citrus Heights, CA, 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Her services will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary, on Saturday, March 19th at 10:30 a.m. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased. *Posted in the 13 March 2005 edition.
