Robert Lee Hughes died March 24, 2005, at his home in Bakersfield, CA. He was 82. Bob was born in Oregon in 1922, the son of Angeline Adams and Harry Hughes. He graduated from Hamilton High School in Los Angeles in 1940. Bob worked for Douglas Aircraft and Offenhauser Equipment Co. before co-founding Webco, Inc. in Venice, CA, in 1954, a motorcycle accessory and racing products business. Bob served in the military as a Naval Aviator, piloting single engine planes in World War II, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant before his discharge in 1945. During the Korean War he was recalled to the Marine Corps as a pilot and earned a Purple Heart and other medals, then was discharged as a Captain in 1954. Bob was married to Roberta Ann Tholen when he returned from World War II, until her death in 1985. He spent the last 19 years married to Chiquita, in happy retirement in Bakersfield, CA, and Kihei, Maui, until Chiquitas death earlier this year. A lifelong outdoorsman and sportsman, Bob excelled in hunting and fishing, water skiing, and golf. Bob is survived by a daughter, Marianne, and her family; his son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Hughes of Ventura, CA; granddaughters, Nicole and Diana Hughes of Ventura and Alyssa Diaz of Alhambra; and son-in-law, Gerry Diaz. Bob will also be missed by his many friends in Bakersfield, Maui, and around the country. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation for Cancer Research. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
