Impastato, age 85, of Birch Bay, died suddenly, but peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 17, 2005. Frank Henry Impastato was born in Auburn, Illinois on December 14, 1919. He was the son of Laurence Impastato (an Italian immigrant) and Frances Margaron Impastato and the grandson of French immigrants Frank Margaron and Victorine Rachel Jourdain. Frank was very proud of his immigrant heritage. The Great Depression hit many families very hard including Franks family. He and his father picked coal slag from coal yards to have heat for the winter. As a young boy, while attending school, Frank started working to help support his family. One of his memorable jobs was as a newspaper boy. He was a member of the Newspaper Boys of America, Inc. in 1936. He gradated from the 8th grade and started working fulltime. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) (1939-1940) helping to build roads in Southern Illinois. He served in the US Army during World War II, in Oklahoma as an MP and as a Sergeant in Panama helping protect the Panama Canal. Frank loved girls with short hair, especially Miss Elsie (Elsie Houston) whom he married on November 7, 1953 in Springfield, Illinois. In 1957 they moved to the San Fernando Valley in Southern California and raised three children; Cheryl Impastato of Lynden, Deborah Severson (Dale, Mister Dale) of Monroe, WA and Laurence Carl Impastato (Beth) of Bakersfield, CA. Frank was the proud grandfather of Eric, Kyle, Frank, Robin, Abigail and Christopher. Frank liked playing with his grandkids, especially the game UNO. Frank and Elsie enjoyed retirement in Doniphan, Missouri returning to Bakersfield, CA. in 1995. He was a devoted husband caring fulltime for Miss Elsie after she suffered a debilitating stroke in 1997. In December of 2000 they moved to Birch Bay with their daughter Cheryl. Frank never met a stranger, he loved to talk and joke with people, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was active at the VFW Post in Doniphan, Missouri and at Greenacres Sr. Center in Bakersfield where he was known to sing and entertain at the drop of a hat. Frank will be unspeakably missed not only by his immediate family, but by numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. No public memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Franks honor to the American Heart Association, Stroke Memorial Fund, 710 2nd Avenue, Suite 900, Seattle, WA. 98104, 1-800-242-8721, or www.americanheart.org.
