There will be no services. Hughie was born with Down Syndrome at a time when people with disabilities often were kept out of the public eye. At that time, the Texas educational system offered few options to the disabled so he spent much of his life in front of a television rather than in school. Despite this backdrop, he grew up charming, affectionate, sometimes stubborn, but often witty and funny. His quality of life improved when he moved to Bakersfield in 1985 and attended the Bakersfield Association for Retarded Citizens. The care and attention by the BARC staff is deeply appreciated and never will be forgotten. He also attended Camp KEEP under the supervision of some very patient people. When Hughie was 48, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and the bright light of affection, humor and wit slowly faded. Survivors include a brother, Charles and his wife, Jan, of Ashland, Ky.; brother, Norman L. Jenkins Jr.; sister, Valencia E Varley; niece, Janell Molina, her husband, Randy, and their children, Kayla, Heather and Drake, and former brother-in-law James W. Varley all of Bakersfield. Hughie was preceded in death by his parents Norman L. Jenkins and Margaret Cook. Special thanks to the Woodlake, Kroll Way Homes and the San Joaquin and Mercy Hospital staffs who cared for Hughie. Despite his disability, Hughie touched many lives even as his lights grew dim. We miss him but know he is in a better place. Contributions may be made to BARC or CALM.
