"Johnny" Norman E. Johnston (Johnny) Services: Fri., Feb. 10, 11:00 a.m. Norman Eugene Johnston died on February 5, 2006. Johnny was born in Long Beach, CA on July 26, 1925. His family moved to Bakersfield that same year. They lived on a farm with his mother, sister and grandparents. He attended Fairfax School from first through eighth grade. He then went on to East Bakersfield High. Since World War II was in progress, Johnny joined the United States Navy and spent three and one-half years on an aircraft carrier. When he returned from over-seas, he was stationed in Miami, Florida where he was assigned to the position of detector for PBS42S. He also played softball for the All Navy Team. In 1946, Johnny returned to Bakersfield and was employed by Safeway where he worked for 40 years. Johnny retired in 1987. He enjoyed playing golf for a while but felt the need to be useful. He then moved cars for the Avis Rental Company for five years. He later joined the Camellia Society. Johnny won several awards for his flowers and also served as President of that society. He then became a volunteer for the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served in the Cath Lab along with chairing Special Events. He was also a member of Libertas Lodge. Johnny is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia; his sister, Lavere; his sons, David Johnston and Randy Freeland; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family. Memorial services will be Friday, February 10, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., at Calvary Bible Church, where he was a member. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Fund.
