Kruse Jan. 23, 1916 – April 8, 2005 Carolyn J. Kruse was born on Jan. 12, 1916 in Richfield, Idaho to William and Mary LaPreal Johnson. She died on April 8, in Tehachapi. Carolyn was married to Howard Kruse on Dec. 23, 1941 in Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in 1937, a master’s degree in chemistry from Ohio State University in 1939 and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1941. Carolyn and Howard spent their careers, over 25 years, employed at the Naval Ordinance Testing Center at China Lake. For more than 10 years, Carolyn served as the director of the technical library at China Lake. In 1972, Carolyn and Howard retired to Stallion Springs. They enjoyed playing golf and photographing the wildflowers of California. Howard died in 1992 and Carolyn continued to enjoy her life in Stallion Springs. She was an active reader and continued to maintain an interest in science as well as many other subjects, including the flora and fauna of California. Carolyn is survived by 11 nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind dear friends and her beloved cat Suji. Carolyn Kruse was a woman ahead of her time. She achieved professional and personal goals that were rare for women of her generation.
