A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 10, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Pastor Stephen Wing will officiate. A private graveside service will be held for family members. Carolyn was born to Frank and Mildred Marker on March 4, 1942, in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. She grew up in New Jersey helping out her dad at Marker's Bakery. After graduating from Montclair High School, Carolyn did her undergraduate studies at Russell Sage College in Troy, New York, getting her degree in physical therapy. It was there, that she met the love of her life, Dr. James Johnston. Carolyn and family moved to Bakersfield in 1979. She worked as a home health physical therapist her entire career, in Albany, New York and Bakersfield, working for Bakersfield Home Health for many years. She was former president of Community Concerts Association, the Bakersfield Art Museum Board, and the Arts Council of Kern. She was president of her P.E.O. sorority chapter. Carolyn shared her love of dogs by adopting rescued greyhounds and revitalized the pet therapy program at the S.P.C.A., going to nursing homes with dogs. Carolyn was honored by KERO-TV with their leadership award for organizing the S.P.C.A. Pet Therapy program. The S.P.C.A. chose her Volunteer of the Year. Her love for music and singing inspired her to join many local choral groups, including the First Presbyterian Church choir, in which she actively participated for 26 years. She was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church. Even with all of her community work involvement, her priority was to her family. She traveled regularly to visit her mother, brothers and children. She was an amazing and selfless mother and a devoted and loving wife. Her most simple pleasure was quilting. She would set aside a morning each week to quilt with friends and belonged to a quilting group that made quilts for babies in the hospital nursery. She is survived by her loving husband of forty years, James S. Johnston, M.D., her three children and their spouses, as well as her three adoring grandchildren: Glen and Holli Johnston of Colorado Springs, CO; Amy, Mike, and Clare Edgar of Denver, CO; Erin, Brandon, Connor and Logan Bates of Bakersfield, CA; Her mother Mildred Marker of Branchville, NJ, and brothers, Steven and Robert Marker. The family wishes to thank Hoffmann Hospice and Doctors Susan Helper, Alan Cartmell, and Antonia Chalmers. In lieu of flowers, Carolyn's family would like contributions to be made to Hoffmann Hospice or the Bakersfield SPCA. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian from 9/8/2005 - 9/9/2005.
