Rev. Nancy McMaster will officiate. A private graveside service will be held on Friday afternoon, June 3, at Hillcrest Memorial Park. John was born in Larned, KS, to Frank Robert and Cassie Orilla Jones on September 25, 1926, and grew up on the family farm with 4 older siblings. During his high school years he moved to Bakersfield to live with an older brother and attended Bakersfield High School. He turned 18 during World War II and enlisted in the Navy, serving as an Aviation Radioman until his discharge in 1946. John spent his working years as an Accountant/Office Manager for several Kern County firms, including Tejon Ranch, Garone Cattle Co., Bolthouse Farms, West Kern Machinery, Hillcrest Memorial Park and Kern Ridge Growers. As a young man, John attended First Christian Church and became active in the College/Young Adult Christian Endeavor Society. There he met his future wife, Arlene Reed. He was an officer in both Kern County and California Christian Endeavor. John and Arlene married in 1957 and became founding members of Valley Christian Church in southwest Bakersfield. They also became the proud parents of two children, a son, Greg and a daughter, Connie. Through the years, he served Valley Christian in many capacities, such as Elder, Treasurer and Choir Director. Gifted with a beautiful tenor voice, he often sang solos or duets with Arlene. During the last 4 years, John has participated in the Adult Day Program operated by the Alzheimers Disease Association of Kern County. The family is grateful for the friendship and loving care that John enjoyed there. John is survived by his wife, Arlene of Bakersfield; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Nancy Jones and their children, Jonathan, Christopher, Robert and Diane of Taylorsville, UT and daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Steve Gorham and their children, Amy and John of Wildwood, MO. Additional survivors include brother-in-law, Alan Reed of Bakersfield; sister-in-law, Janet and Roger Ehrhorn of Ben Lomand; brother-in-law, Tom and Elaine Reed of Covina; sister-in-law, Alverda Jorgenson of Moses Lake, WA; sister-in-law, Linda Smithwick of Augusta, ME and many nieces and nephews throughout the U.S. Visitation will be on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in Johns memory to Valley Christian Church, 1960 Ming Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304 or to the Alzheimers Disease Association of Kern County, 5500 Olive Dr., Bldg. 1, Bakersfield, CA 93308.
