A viewing is scheduled for Sunday, November 27th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., at Mish Funeral Home, 120 Minner Ave., Bakersfield, CA. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 28th, 1:00 p.m., at the First Missionary Baptist Church, 769 3rd St., in McFarland, California. Dick Kagler was born in Blooming Grove, Texas, on January 6, 1921. He graduated from Blooming Grove High School and moved to Bakersfield in 1938. Dick served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bertha and Bob Kagler; his brother, Dean Kagler and sister, Juanita Hunt. Dick married Ollie Hester Smith of Colfax, Louisiana in 1946 and returned to McFarland, CA where he started Kagler Farms. Ollie passed away in an automobile accident in 1957 leaving him with two young children, Bob and Candy. Dick found love again in 1966 when Velma Munger rescued him from self-imposed bachelorhood. They were married on September 23, 1967 and he added three more children to his family, Judy, Rich and Bev. Dick and Velma continued their family farming operation based in McFarland and Pixley until his retirement in 2000. The couple moved to Bakersfield in 2001. Dick was an active member of the McFarland First Missionary Baptist Church from 1950 until his death. Over the years he served as a Trustee and Sunday School Teacher. Dick is survived by his wife of 38 years, Velma Kagler of Bakersfield; his son and daughter, Bob and Kathy Kagler of Pretoria, South Africa and grandchildren, Matt, Marc and Micah; his daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Sam Self of Littleton, Colorado and three grandchildren, Kathryn, Emily and Edward; his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Larry Niemeyer of Nairobi, Kenya and two grandchildren, Heath and Ronan; his son and daughter-in- law, Rich and Pat Munger of Warwick, Rhode Island and two grandchildren, Ben and Kristin; and daughter, Bev Aleszka of Wyoming, Michigan and grandchildren, Michael, Tonya and Kimberly. Dick also is survived by six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to Harvest Heralds, P.O. Box 1147 Beaverton, Oregon 97075-1147.
