Otto C. Kooren Oct. 18, 1922 - Feb. 10, 2006 Internment: Arnhem, the Netherlands Otto Cornelis Kooren (83) passed away on February 10, 2006, at the Hallmark Residential Care Facility, Bakersfield, California. Otto was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, the absolute love of his life, Ilse Kooren. He is survived by his twin brother, Jan and his wife, Beryl of New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada; his younger brother, Marinus of Roosendaal, the Netherlands (Holland), and his older cousin, Joos Schoon-Donsu of Roosendaal, the Netherlands. He is also survived by his son, Otto C. (Dutch) Kooren Jr. and his wife, Margo of Bakersfield, California; and grandsons, Derek, Daniel and David and his wife, Ofelia Kooren of Bakersfield, California and Jon-Michiel Kooren of Elk Grove, California. He is also survived by his great-grandchild, Aubree Kooren of Bakersfield, California and nieces and nephews in Holland, Canada and Northern California. Born in Magalang, Java, Indonesia, Otto served in the Royal Dutch Navy patrolling the West East Indies as an engineering officer. Captured by the Japanese during World War II, while on leave in Indonesia, Otto spent the duration of the war in a P.O.W. camp. Otto married his lifelong mate, Ilse Theresia Wegner in June 1948 and as a couple immigrated to Holland on June 25, 1950. He graduated from the University of Technical Science in Rotterdam, the Netherlands as a mechanical engineer and worked for Hansen Crane an American company in Rotterdam. Otto, Ilse and their son, Otto Junior immigrated to Scottsdale, Arizona on December 7, 1958. In 1964 the family moved to Santa Clara, California where he resided for the next 39 years. Otto completed his many years of employment with Ford Aerospace and Communications Corporation in San Jose, California, where he was on the design team that designed and supervised the construction of multiple radars, satellites, and the robotic arm of the space shuttle, Discovery. In retirement Otto enjoyed extended vacations to Holland and getaways in Las Vegas, San Diego and Hawaii. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
