Born in San Francisco, she graduated from UCLA with her twin sister, Louise, in 1942. She moved to Kern County and taught for a short time in Buttonwillow. An opportunity to travel and teach took her to South America. For seven years she was a teacher and supervisor of schools in Venezuela for the Creole Petroleum Corporation, returning to Bakersfield in 1953. For over 50 years she served in the Bakersfield City School District, teaching at various junior high and elementary schools, including Washington Jr. High, where she spent the majority of her career. Although Millrose School closed in 1966, it afforded her the opportunity to develop progressive reading programs that she used throughout the rest of her career. Even after retiring, she continued to devote countless hours as a volunteer reading tutor until 2004. Both reading and music were important in her life. She conducted the Glee Club at several schools where she taught, and also offered private piano lessons. She was quoted in The Californian as saying: Books and music enrich our lives. Books take you wherever you wish to go. There is no end to the journey. She will be greatly missed by her family, many friends, colleagues, and former students. She is survived by her son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Terry from Los Angeles; her niece, Heidi Hughey of St. Louis; her nephews, Michael Branstetter of Monterey and Scott Branstetter of La Jolla. There will be a gathering to celebrate her life on Sunday, August 28. For further information, please call (661) 872-4159. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 7/31/2005.
