Mr. Kirkland was born and received his early education in Bakersfield schools. He attended Bakersfield High School where he was a member of the Bakersfield High School Driller football team. After serving in the Army from 1962 to 1965, he attended Bakersfield Community College where he wrote a sports column for the Renegade Rip. He received his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from California State University at Hayward in 1973. Mr. Kirkland was Secretary/Treasurer and acting Field Representative for Laborers local Union 886 in Oakland, California. Mr. Kirkland is survived by his wife, Lee; his son, John Kirkland and granddaughter, Allyson of Oakley; his mother, Pauline Sargent and his brothers, Jerry and Ted Kirkland of Bakersfield.
