He suffered greatly from a number of ailments for many years. Although small in stature, Chets courage was gigantic. He was a role model for many of those who knew and loved him. Chet never asked, What would Jesus do? because he lived his life with love of God and neighbor, and found it hard to pass by less fortunate people or animals without attempting to assist them. He was a gentle and humble man. Chet found special joy in sports and treasured a photograph from the St. Joseph newspaper of him with Jack Dempsey upon his winning the Golden Gloves Championship at age 14. He attended most every game when his grandsons played high school and college football and was a 45-year fan of the Bakersfield College Renegades. This has been a great year for Chet because the Pittsburgh Steelers are his team. Chets wit was legendary and he fast became a favorite of shopclerks, nurses, the rosary group and many of those who came in contact with him. He treated the nobodies of the world with the same dignity as the somebodies. Awaiting his arrival in heaven are his three deceased sons, Peter, Paul and Kevin Lucas; his parents, Harlan and Helen Lucas; a brother, Jerry Lucas; and numerous other relatives and friends, as well as his beloved Schnauzers, Gretchen and Sweet Stuff, and other dearly loved pets. Chet is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; his daughter, Suzanne Gloeckner and her husband, Stephen; their sons, Sean, David and Jon Gloeckner, and their daughter, Tamrin White and husband, Jason; and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Brianna Gloeckner. He is also survived by his son, Kelly Lucas and wife, Melinda and their children, Amanda, Patrick and Bridget Lucas. He is survived by daughter-in-law, Cindy Lucas, widow of son, Paul; and their son, Andrew Lucas and daughter, Erin Enos and husband, Robert Enos. Chet was especially close to the Rensel family, Bob and Eileen, Mimi, Ann, Michael and Peter, and their families; and many friends including Tony and Christine (Dawson) Koehn and Don and Joann Border. Also surviving Chet are his four brothers and two sisters: Jack, Harlan (Buddy), Don, Danny, Beverly and Betty. They telephoned him often, usually in conference calls which brought him great joy. They are a special and wonderful family. Chet is also mourned by his brothers-in-law, Dennis, Thomas and Michael Bayne, and their wives and children. Chet was born October 15, 1931, in St. Joseph, Missouri where he attended grammar and high schools until he joined the Navy at age 15. He completed high school during his Naval service and later took accounting courses at Bakersfield College, which allowed him to pursue almost 50 years in his chosen profession of accounting. Those years included work with Bank of America, Richfield and Standard Oils, Harrison/Lusich Engineering, and his final employment with Joe Mendiburu Enterprises where he served as controller for almost 35 years. Many of his co- workers from these companies became lifelong friends. Chets military service included two tours of duty in the Navy, the second during the Korean Conflict when he received several medals and ribbons, plus a letter of Commendation. During his overseas deployment he took religious instruction in Catholicism, the faith of his wife, serving God faithfully for the next 53 years. The family wishes to thank the Bakersfield Heart Hospital personnel. They were wonderful. We also thank Doctors Patrick Daley, Stephen Borowsky and Nick Hansa whose efforts, though valiant, could not thwart Gods wishes. Visitation will be Noon to 3:00 p.m. February 3rd, at Greenlawn Mortuary, River Blvd.; Recitation of the Rosary at 5:00 p.m., February 3rd, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 124 Columbus Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4th, also at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Chets pallbearers will be his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chets name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 1800 Baker Street; the Alpha Canine Sanctuary, P.O.
