Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., reception following at the Renegade Room at Bakersfield College. Bill was born August 30, 1923, on the Associated Oil Lease in Fellows, CA. His parents, Scott and Bertha Lingo, came to California from the Ozarks of Missouri in 1920. He was preceded in death by his first love and wife, Kathryn, his parents, and his siblings, Art, Mildred, and Mabel. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren: Art and Jan of Roseville, MN; Tom and JoAnne of Somis, CA, and their children, Lissa, Ben, Jake and Chelsea, and 3 great-grandsons by Ben and Sheri; Marci and Richard Holden of Bakersfield; and Roger and Kelly of Bend, OR. Also, he is survived by his extended family, Barbaras children, Jerelyn and Dan Harrington of Visalia, Larry and Nancy Leask and Wally Leask of Bakersfield, along with 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Raised in an environment that treasured learning, he excelled in school, from Midway Elementary, to Taft High School, to Taft Junior College, and the University of Texas. The son of a rig-builder, he was born to be an oil man. He held only two jobs during his adult life that were not in the industry: he was a weatherman on the USS Pitt, serving in the Pacific during WWII, and he worked briefly for the California Department of Highways, surveying for the highway to Tehachapi after WWII. His first job out of the Navy was with Associated Tidewater, where his father had worked. He later worked for Navy Oil, then Eastman Oil Well Survey Co. He moved to Richfield before becoming a partner in Di-Dril. His work took him many places France, Alaska, New Mexico, Louisiana, Oregon, and nearly every oil, natural gas, and steam field in California. His expertise in the field of directional drilling was well recognized, and in 1974 he worked with Red Adair to drill the relief well to extinguish a huge natural gas fire at MacDonald Island. In semi-retirement, he was co-owner of a pipe perforating company and worked briefly in Saudi Arabia. In retirement, Bill led several organizations, such as Petroleum Production Pioneers, SIRS, and Navy League. He donated his time and knowledge to the Kern Oil Museum and the West Side Oil Museum. He also shared coffee many mornings with the old geezers in his coffee klatch. He treasured his friends, both old and new. Throughout his life, he loved history, reading, cooking for family and friends, and traveling, in the U.S. and abroad. He and Barbara traveled around the world on their honeymoon. He was blessed in his choice of his wife, Kathryn, 59 years ago, just as he was blessed in his choice of his current wife, Barbara, since 2000. World traveler, fierce patriot, native Californian, oil pioneer, and proud Freemason of 59 years, hes on his journey to join his beloved Kathryn. Godspeed!
