Christina MacKellar Mashtaire was born on May 1, 1918, in Santa Barbara, California to John and Margaret MacKellar. Christina graduated from Santa Barbara State College (now UCSB) with a BA in History and Education. She was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award and Outstanding Senior Woman Award. In 1941 she earned a Masters degree in History from UC Berkeley and completed additional graduate work at USC, UCLA, San Jose State College and Fresno State College. Christina held credentials in Library Science, General Secondary, Administration and Supervision. For 27 years she was the head librarian at East Bakersfield High School. When she retired from the Kern High School District it was as the Director of Instructional Media. Throughout her career she also taught courses in Library Science for various state universities. She continued to work as an ad hoc consultant for the State Department of Education after her retirement. In 1991 she was selected to attend the White House Conference on Libraries in Washington DC. Christina married George Mashtaire in 1946 and they were married for 51 years. George and Christina had a very active retirement, traveling in their motor home throughout the United States including Alaska, Canada and Nova Scotia. They were active in the Winnebago Itasca Travelers holding the office of co-vice President of the California State club and they had various national offices for several terms. George passed away in 1997. For over 20 years Christina was actively involved in the California Retired Teachers Association holding various offices for that organization on a local and state level. In 2002 she was the recipient of the Ruth dePrida Award, the highest honor for the California Retired Teachers Association. Christina was a 39-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International holding many offices for that organization as well. She was on the board of the Friends of the Kern County Library and had served on the board of the YWCA. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years as well. Christina Mashtaire is survived by her daughter, Mairead and her husband, John Jaime; her grandson, Michael and his wife, Courtney Jaime; her granddaughter, Mary (Chrissie) Jaime and sister, Margaret MacKellar.
