Merry Kay was born on June 6, 1940, to Benjamin (Mike) and Maxyne Mason in Bakersfield, where she resided nearly her entire life. She was preceded in death by both Mike and Maxyne. Merry Kay is survived by her daughter Kem Swan and fiancée Van Thurman; son Vance Ezell and fiancée Rebecca Hale; her sister Lenore Madden and husband Tom; brother Edward Mason; and grandchildren Zachary Swan, Jansen Swan, Carson Ezell and Chancellor Ezell, plus numerous other family members and dear friends. Merry Kay worked in the Counseling Department at Bakersfield College for 37 years, which culminated with her being awarded "Classified Employee of the Year" in 2000. The true passion in her professional life, however, was her affiliation with the California School Employees Association (CSEA). She poured countless hours and devotion into CSEA. After being named a Regional Representative, she was eventually voted into the position of State Director for Area D, where she served until her retirement. After retirement from Bakersfield College in 2002, she became the Director of the Retirement Chapter of CSEA, an office she held until her death. Merry Kay poured her heart and soul into everything she undertook, be it political involvement, her work with CSEA or just making sure her family and friends were taken care of. People were in awe of her boundless enthusiasm and her ceaseless energy. Of everything in Merry Kay's wonderful life, though, her grandchildren were always the brightest light in her world. And she made sure they and everyone knew it. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Pallbearers will be nephews Derek and Adam Schweitzer, and Rick Morel, Alan Johnson, Scott King and Ron Settle. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian from 12/18/2005 - 12/19/2005.
