She and husband, DeWitt Logan Mattson, came to Buttonwillow in 1938 where they farmed until his death in 1962. She also sold insurance for Farm Bureau and was an income tax preparer for H & R Block. Helen moved to Bakersfield in 1963 where she studied cosmetology and became a certified instructor. She taught at Federicos and Marinello Combers Beauty Schools in Bakersfield and a school in Glendale for over 10 years. Under her leadership as manager of these schools she helped many students obtain scholarships and learn a useful trade. Later she owned and operated M'Lady Salon until retirement in the 1980s. Helen Mattson possessed an indomitable spirit, always looked at the bright side and was quick to laugh. Loving and supporting her family was one of her highest values. Helen served as an active 4H volunteer and Girl Scout leader when her children were growing up. She kept in close contact with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, hosting or participating in family gatherings throughout her life. Helen succumbed on Thanksgiving Day after a long battle with asthma. She is survived by her five children, Doris Jean Barnes (Bakersfield), Phyllis Joan McClure (Bakersfield), Donald Eugene Mattson (Corvallis, OR), Allen Roy Mattson (West Palm Beach Gardens, FL), Christine Margaret Bruhn (Davis, CA); 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 p.m., at the Church of Christ, 425 South H Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304 (ph: 832-7464). The family requests no flowers. Because of her love for children and gardening, the family asks that people remember Helen through donations for scholarships for children to attend the Yosemite Bible Camp (in care of Church of Christ at the above address) or a favorite charity.
