He is mourned by his loving wife, Jane Ingalls McClain, who also resides at Glenwood Gardens. He will be sorely missed by his sons, Charles McClain and his wife, Gay, of Fresno, California; and Carl McClain and his wife, Margie, of Grover Beach, California. Grandchildren include Luke McClain of Bakersfield, Dana Parker-McClain of Whistler, British Columbia, Ian McClain of Arroyo Grande, California, and Marlena McClain, also of Grover Beach. Robert was born November 28, 1916 to Jesse and Charles McClain in Pomona, California. Bob was the youngest and last living member of the McClain family of Shafter, California, pioneer farmers who were amongst the original settlers of that community in the early years of the last century. A 1933 graduate of Bakersfield High School, he was a lifelong Kern County farmer of wide renown and great affection, who successfully developed agricultural land in the Buttonwillow and Wasco areas prior to, during, and following World War II. He served with distinction as an officer and board member in numerous farmers' cooperatives, including CalCot, and as a member of the State Water Board during construction of the Central Valley Project. Bob was active in many service organizations and charities in his community, including the Lions' of Shafter and Bakersfield Elks' (BPOE). An avid fisherman and a fine shot, he cherished the high Sierras and the Central Coast. He loved his family, his friends, entertaining, and he had a passion for poker and pitch, spending many a happy day trading winnings with his pals in the back room of the Shafter Motel. Bob and his peers built this Valley to the lasting benefit of us all. He was the best. Respects may be paid in a viewing to be held at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter, California from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10th. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11th, at Shafter Memorial Park, followed by a memorial and reception at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Shafter.
