Donald was born and raised in a rural area near Waterloo, Iowa. Donald served in the Navy during the Korean War and upon discharge, resided in California for the remainder of his life. He worked for 36 years as a heavy equipment operator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Upon his retirement he moved to Bakersfield, CA. Donald was a member of Elks Lodge #1345 as well as Operating Engineers Local No. 3. Donald was an avid San Francisco 49er fan for 45+ years. He enjoyed playing golf, and attending, as well as participating in a variety of family sporting activities. He especially enjoyed doting on his grandchildren who were the light of his life. He was the type of man who was first to offer a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on or a loving hug. He was a strong mans man, yet a teddy bear to all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ida. He is also survived by his son Connie and wife Shelly of Brentwood, CA; daughter Carol and husband Bruce Bender of Bakersfield, CA; daughter Lynda of Arizona; grandchildren Christina, Kelly, Brett, Logan, Nick and Brian; brothers James and Robert; sister Mary as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his large extended family and a wide assortment of friends who loved him dearly. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Mary McMahon and 4 siblings, Mildred, Jerome, Paul and Joseph. The memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hoffman Hospice, 5300 California Ave., Suite 1, Bakersfield, CA or the American Cancer Society.
