William (Bill) McNew

Services: Wed., Dec. 14, 10:00 a.m. 

Funeral services will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home for Bill McNew, age 
73, on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the Valley Bible Church of 
Shafter, with Pastor Mike Polley officiating. Interment will follow at Shafter 
Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at Peters Funeral Home on Tuesday, 
December 13, 2005, from 2 to 8 p.m. Bill was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, 
to Spurgeon and Annie McNew. He came to Salinas as a young boy moved to 
Shafter and attended Rio Bravo School graduating with the Shafter High class 
of 1951, and attended Bakersfield College. Upon graduation he enlisted in the 
Army, during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1953. Bill married Letha Daniel 
in Reno, on March 7, 1954. The couple lived in Van Nuys for a period where 
Bill worked for Lockheed Aircraft. Bill and Letha returned to Shafter, and 
Bill was the owner/operator of the ARCO and Gulf-Exxon Stations until their 
sale. Bill also worked at Shafter High School, then for PG&E in construction 
helping to build the power line from Kern County to Diablo Canyon, upon 
completion, Bill returned to Richland Elementary School in the maintenance 
department; retiring in 1991. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and digging for 
relics in the mountains and deserts; and was a member of the Southern Baptist 
Church. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Spurgeon and Annie McNew; 
son, Frederick in 1994; and his brother, Duane. He is survived by his wife, 
Letha; sons, Michael and wife, Connie McNew of Bakersfield and William Richard 
McNew and wife, Cindy of Oregon; brothers, Aubrey McNew and James and wife, 
Allynn McNew all of Bakersfield; sister, Pauline Groves of Bakersfield; 9 
grandchildren, Lisa, Cheryl, Charles, Lee, Denise, Vickye, Cole, Amanda and 
Trisha; 4 great-grandchildren, Dakota, Kaden, Branden and Jasmine.
