California Ave., for Juan Contreras Medrano who passed away March 17, 2006, in Bakersfield, California. Juan Medrano was born to Maximiliano and Maria Medrano Contreras, son of "El presidente del Pueblo" in their hometown. He began working at the age of 8 to help with the family farm business. He met his wife Hortencia of 49 years in Piedras Negras, Mexico. He worked as a City Bus Driver and had several other jobs. He moved his family to Bakersfield, CA for a better life. He was employed by Bidart Brothers for 35 years and retired at age 67 in 1988. He was motivated to become a citizen of the United Stated with limited English speaking skills and in 1995 proudly received his citizenship. He loved music, dancing, food, and he cooked a mean "Menudo". He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and enjoyed life with his family and friends. He never gave up on life and always liked to tell jokes with a great sense of humor. His smile was as big as his heart. He taught his children to believe in God, to be kind, compassionate, and to help others less fortunate. He inspired all of those who knew him to be strong by saying "Echale ganas a la vida". He will be missed tremendously but will never be forgotten. He went to be with the Lord leaving behind hope for his family that we will be reunited in Heaven. Juan is survived by his wife, Hortencia Medrano; 33 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and his 10 children, Elida Margaret Ramirez, Martha Braden, Juanita Luevano, Alma Contreras, Irma, Manuel, Hector, Olga, Maria, and Jorge Medrano; son in-laws, Phillip Ramirez, Kevin Braden, Mike Luevano and daughter-in-law, Ana Medrano. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospital "floor 2 & 4", Pharmacist Bruce Massa and special thanks to Dr. Syed Alam, Sugie and his staff. Te queremos mucho descansa en paz.
