Rev. Jim Kilgore, pastor of the Freewill Baptist Church will officiate and entombment will follow in West Side District Cemetery Mausoleum. Don was born in Springfield, Missouri on June 24, 1940 and passed away in Bakersfield on January 31, 2006. He moved to Taft with his family when he was 13 years old. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, ceramics, painting and watching westerns on TV. He attended sporting events that his family members participated in. Many will remember Don as being the unofficial mayor of Buchanan Street and for riding his ten speed bike and drinking Pepsi. Don was an honorary member of the SEI Union. He was a member of ARC and participated in Special Olympics for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Lucille; his brother, Ralph Mac Merrill and his sister, Sarah Tucker. Don is survived by his mother, Eulah Merrill; his sisters, Eulah Snooks Howell, Melinda Jane Criswell and her husband, Ed, Faith Mitchell, all of Taft and Lina Wade and her husband, John of Tell City, Indiana; several nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews; his longtime girlfriend, Leah Wright and by his dog, Jake. The family has suggested that donations in Dons memory may be made to Kern County Special Olympics, P.O. Box 2544, Bakersfield, CA 93303, please put Taft in memo section or the S.P.C.A., 3000 Gibson St., Bakersfield, CA 93308. Friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
