She received Christ in her life at an early age and maintained a faithful walk with the Lord throughout her lifetime. Gertrude spent her early years on a farm. She enjoyed being outside. She worked as a farm laborer for many years. Later she became a domestic engineer until she retired. She worked hard all of her life. She raised her seven girls, making sure they had food to eat, clothes to wear and a place to sleep. She taught them cleanliness is next to Godliness. But, Gertrude was a pack rat. She loved going to the swap meet. Each time someone came to visit she had something to give. She taught us never to refuse a gift (big or small, liked or disliked) just say thank you and smile. She knew where all of her possessions were at all times. She wouldnt eat anything new unless you tried it first. Friends and relatives looked forward to the holidays to receive one of her mouth-watering sweet potato pies. For all of the above and much-much more she will truly be missed. In 1945, she met and married Rufus Thomas, who preceded her in death, and one daughter, Elsie Perry. She is survived by six daughters, Peggie Payne (Sam) of Ontario, CA, Ruth Harris of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Helen Thomas and Odessa Thomas, both of Corona, CA, Linda Thomas of Bakersfield, CA, Irene Welch of Long Beach, CA; she is also survived by one brother, Joe Curtis Floyd, Texarkana, AR; five sisters, Priscilla Lane of Los Angeles, CA, Georgia Ruth Johnson of Oakland, CA, Mildred Dunbar of Cincinnati, OH, Letha Floyd and Maudie Jean Brown, both of Texarkana, AR; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, four great-great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, October 21, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at Jerusalem Mission COGIC, 924 Cottonwood Road, with Supt. Freddie Thomas officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery. For additional service information please call 631-2825.
