Felix Joseph Macewich, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on March 13, 2005. He was born November 24, 1918, in the White Mountains of Lincoln, New Hampshire. His parents ran a boarding house for the loggers who worked the paper mill. At age thirteen, his family moved to Portsmouth where they owned and operated a large dairy farm. In 1941, at age 22, Phil joined the Navy where he met and married his wife, Lois, a year later. He served five years on a naval ship and was based in the Philippines and Sidney, Australia. After the bombing of Pear Harbor, Phil was brought in to do the underwater welding repairing the damaged battleships. Honorably discharged in 1946, he went home to work the dairy and decided to look for work in California. Landing a job (with only six dollars in his pocket) he began work in 1947 for Mobil Oil. Living in Taft and working the next 36 years for Mobil, he retired as a welder at age 65 in 1983. For the next twelve years, he and his wife, Lois traveled in their fifth-wheel about the country from Alaska to Mexico. Throughout his life he enjoyed raising birds, deer hunting by horseback in the high country, fishing, traveling and many other hobbies. His biggest accomplishment besides helping raise four daughters was building a home on Greenhorn Mountain east of Bakersfield. Buying and spending many weekends tearing down the old McKittrick Cook House, along with two old lease houses that he purchased, at age 45, he began using the lumber to build. Spending almost every weekend for the next 10 years he built a magnificent mountain home for his family to enjoy and get away from the summers heat of Taft. Never an ending job, he continued laying out beautiful rock walls around the property among the trees. Phil is preceded in death by his wife, Lois of 58 years, a son, John Stanley Macewich. Survived by daughters, Carol-Sweaney and husband, Max Carpenter of Missouri, Phyllis Nunes of Taft, Mary Jo and husband, Larry Joyner of the Lake Isabella area, Janet and husband, Rick Hawkins of Taft; five grandchildren, Roger and wife, Melissa Sweaney of Wisconsin, Kiah and husband, Steven Pues of Lake Isabella area, Kadiah Bauer of Taft, Landon and Dallas Joyner of the Lake Isabella area, along with five great-grandchildren.
