After graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1948, he hired on as a roughneck at Texaco and worked in the local oil fields for several years. He also had a natural artistic talent and worked briefly as a sketch artist drawing cartoon layouts for the Walt Disney Studios. Duffy (as he preferred to be called) relocated to Richmond, California and worked for Bethlehem Steel until retirement. His health began declining after he suffered a stroke in 1997 and he became a patient at Creekside Convalescent Center in San Pablo. In his younger days he was an amateur fighter and he enjoyed living on the edge while indulging his passion for working on and driving hot rods. He loved working with his hands and he kept a tool box at his bedside for tinkering and fixing things. Even in his last days he was busy planning further modifications to his customized metallic-red electric wheelchair! Duffy became critically ill last week and was transferred to Doctor's Hospital in San Pablo. He took his last breath peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side on May 15, 2005. His tall tales, twinkling blue eyes, love of life and hearty laughter will be missed. He looked forward to waking up in heaven to find his beloved Lab and German Shepherd in the middle of a country field, waiting for their evening walk. He is survived by his current wife of 27 years, Sarah; his sister, Marilyn Williams of Kernville; his daughter, DeAnn McEwen of Cypress; his son, Mike McEwen of Hesperia; granddaughters, Sarah Cerrona of Grass Valley and Shannon Sites of Port Hueneme; great- granddaughters, Samantha and Gracyn Sites; nephew, Allen Byrd and niece, Nancy Gutcher of Bakersfield. Private funeral arrangements have been made with the Neptune Society of Northern California. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 5/22/2005.
