She attended local schools graduating first from Santa Monica High and then California Nursing School at USC in 1946. While attending USC she met her future husband, Charles Reiland, who was attending Dental School. They were married on August 20, 1945 and moved to Bakersfield in 1952 to start Charles dental practice and to raise their family. Her undaunting spirit and love for God and life permeated each and everyone she met. Her wit and honesty gave new meaning to life for those who loved her. JoAnn loved to garden and filled her home with the beauty of color and fragrance when in bloom. She was an intelligent, strong and committed wife. She took care of her husband after suffering a stroke in 1971 for 8 years, while at the same time working as a Public Health Nurse for the County of Kern. She retired from the county in 1979.
