She passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on May 25, 2005. Mary earned an AA degree from Los Angeles City College. She then proceeded to work as a draftsman assistant during WWII. After the war, she took on the important job as a homemaker. She spent most of her life volunteering with PTA and at Panorama Hospital. Although she was always in charge, she was content to let others receive recognition. Mary was exceedingly proud of her family and their accomplishments. A talented seamstress and crafter she spent most of her years sewing clothes and creating gifts for the family and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Ross Steckel, and their infant daughter, Barbara. Mary is survived by her two brothers, Doug McRoy, Bob and wife, Caroline McRoy; her children, Joanie Steckel, Ginny and husband, Bill Jorgenson, and Bob Steckel; her four grandchildren, Kathy Derck, Lori and husband, David Tourney, Michele and husband, TSgt. Michael Gambill USAF, and Eric Jorgenson; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Melissa, and Hannah Gambill and Dawson and Daniel Tourney as well as other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Hoffmann Hospice. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 28, 2005, and Sunday, May 29, 2005, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Ave. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 31st, at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen Street, in Chatsworth, CA.
