Michelsen, M.D. Services: Mon., Aug. 8, 10 a.m. Erik died at home early in the morning on July 30, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. He was 84 years old. Erik was born in New York to Danish parents, Holger and Edith Wadum Michelsen. At an early age, he moved back to Denmark, where he went to a boarding school and later started his medical studies at the University of Copenhagen. In 1945 when the war in Europe was over, he returned to the U.S. where he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and underwent training in the San Diego and Great Lakes Naval Centers. After the war in the Pacific, Erik went back to Denmark, completing his medical studies and graduating from the University of Copenhagen. Erik spent many years as a pathologist, including three years in the Panama Canal Zone studying tropical diseases. He was a pathologist at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield until he retired. Erik is survived by his wife, Ingrid; his children, Niels Michelsen and Annelise Judd; grandchildren, Emma and Samuel Judd; and brother, Per Michelsen; as well as his many friends in the Danish Lodge, of which he was a dedicated member for many years. Eriks family will remember him with love as a wonderful husband and father. Dad was always there to solve any problem or answer any question. His family and friends will miss his fine, dry wit and old-fashioned polite manners. A memorial service will be held on Monday August 8, 10:00 a.m., in the Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Chapel, 1100 Truxtun Ave., followed by a reception at the Michelsen home. Donations in Eriks memory may be made to the Hoffmann Hospice. Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Funeral Directors Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 8/5/2005.
