Merle Cross Milford

9/15/1917 - 3/19/2005



Born September 15, 1917 in Berkeley California. Died in Bakersfield 

California; March 19, 2005. Mrs. Milford graduated with a Bachelors degree in 

Political Science from the University of California Berkeley in 1940. After 

graduation, she worked in the insurance industry in San Francisco. She met 

Jack Milford during World War II and they were married in 1945 and moved to 

Waterford Michigan. 



Mrs. Milford taught first and second grade in the Waterford School District 

for many years. She received a Masters degree in education from Michigan State 

University. Mrs. Milford retired from teaching in 1983 and returned to 

California, residing in Bakersfield, where her family was one of the founding 

families in the area during the 1800s. During retirement, Mrs. Milford 

traveled the world. She was active in the American Association of University 

Women, the 60+ Club, the Retired Teachers Association and numerous Bridge 

clubs. Mrs. Milford volunteered as a reading tutor for both children and 

adults in the Bakersfield School District. She also was a volunteer tax 

preparer for many years in the Bakersfield area.



Her daughter, Cheryl and her beloved granddaughter, Caroline in Wexford, PA 

and her daughter, Terry and her husband, Frank in Laguna Hills, CA, survive 

Mrs. Milford.
