She greeted her Lord and Savior face-to-face on April 14, 2005, in Bakersfield, California. Vena met her future husband at the age of ten, when twelve-year-old Curtis Pearsey moved to her dusty Texas town. It was love at first sight, Curtis remembers. Puppy love that took us all the way through school. That puppy love grew into a steadfast devotion and respect as the sweethearts grew to young adulthood. The couple was married in 1945 after Curtis returned from World War II. A year later, they moved to Los Angeles where Curtis pursued a degree in electronic engineering, while Vena kept their home in order. In 1947, Curtis and Vena bought a house in Redondo Beach and Curtis set up a TV service business in Inglewood, which grew into a sales and rental business over the years. The Pearsey franchise grew to 12 stores in L.A. and the San Joaquin Valley. As the mother of four young boys, Vena got them off to school and then worked as a secretary and bookkeeper until is was time to meet her boys after school. She was a great mother of boys, son Nick remembers. She let us be rough and tumble, and get dirty and play outside until dark. She was also very involved in her sons little league and basketball games. She was the number one sports mom. She never missed a game, son Scott said. She was the one you could always hear. You can bet the umps and refs all knew her, Nick remembers. Even with working at the store and ferrying her sons to after-school activities, Vena managed to gather her family around the dinner table every night at 7, a time of reconnecting that Curtis treasured. As a child, Vena was encouraged by her aunt to memorize poetry which she recited at local service clubs. In later years, Vena continue to recite silly tongue-twisters to the delight of her grandchildren. One trait Venas sons will always remember is her optimism. She was the most positive, inspirational person I knew. Her glass was always half full. She was never negative or depressed, and always an encourager, son Mark remembered. For 24 years, Vena faithfully taught second grade Sunday School, spending much of each week preparing song cards and flannel graph characters. In fact, one whole room of the Pearsey home was devoted to Venas Sunday School supplies. Nick and Scott say their mothers commitment to ministry rubbed off on them. Son Les is most grateful that his mother led his future wife to Jesus in her second grade Sunday School class. Her love of the Lord is a legacy that is now being passed on to my grandkids, Les said. Vena is survived by Curtis, her husband of 60 wonderful years; sons, Nick and wife, Lois (Bakersfield), Scott and wife, Carolyn (Bakersfield), Mark and wife, Kathy (Escondido), and Les and wife, Lori (Bakersfield); 17 grandchildren; and 5 great grandsons. Private interment will be Tuesday morning, April 19, 2005, at Hillcrest Memorial Park. A memorial service celebrating Venas life will follow the interment at Laurelglen Bible Church, 2801 Ashe Road, at 12:30 p.m. Memorial donations can be sent to: LBC Missions, Laurelglen Bible Church, 2801 Ashe Road, Bakersfield, CA, 93309.
