He was 83 years old. Rev. Lon Heighton will conduct a memorial service at 10 a.m. Monday August 1, at the Ridgeview Church of the Nazarene, 8420 Stine Road, Bakersfield. Mr. Morris was born in Central City, Kentucky on May 14, 1922 the first of nine children to James and Annabelle Morris. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1940 and was aboard the battleship Pennsylvania in Pearl Harbor on the day of the Japanese attack that began World War II. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 22 years in the Regular and the Active Reserves. Mr. Morris lived most of his life in Kern County, California where he worked as an equipment foreman for the County of Kern and the City of Bakersfield. He also owned and operated a business in the Kern River Valley for over ten years and retired as an equipment supervisor for the U.S. Borax Company in Boron, California. Mr. Morris was a Member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the American Battleship Association, the U.S. Force Academy Golf Club, and the Grand Masonic Lodge of Colorado. Mr. Morris is survived, among others, by his wife, Retha of Colorado Springs; daughter, Linda Lucas of Red Bluff, California; sons, Richard Morris of Porterville, California and Jim Morris of Grants Pass, Oregon; stepson, Doug Scheidegger of Kingsville, Missouri; and stepdaughter, Connie Campbell of Kansas City. He also leaves sisters, Mary, Betty and Edith Mae; and brothers, Elbert and Allen all of Kentucky; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
