Fonkert Services: Sun., June 19, 3:00 p.m. Dorothy N. Fonkert was born on August 13, 1919, in Clovis, New Mexico, to William and Nelle Nutter. After a childhood spent in Needles and San Diego, Bakersfield became her home. It was there that she met and married Peter J. Fonkert in 1952. Peter preceded her in death in 1998, as did their only child, Glennelle, in 1981. Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and for many years was an extremely active member of the First United Methodist Church in Bakersfield and contributed an extraordinary amount of her energy to its charitable activities. Another charitable organization she worked with and supported over the years was the Heifer Project. In addition, one of her main loves was her membership in the OU Chapter of P.E.O., serving three terms as its president. During much of her adult life, she worked in the retail jewelry business, but also knew the joy of travel that took her and her husband on many adventures around the country. Dorothy was a very active person almost to the end of her life. Early this year she learned that she was suffering from pancreatic cancer, but bravely continued to enjoy life until her death on June 11, 2005. She is survived by her nephews, Melvin L. Nutter of Long Beach, CA and Russell E. Nutter of Everett, Washington, as well as her niece, Lois Parks of Sparks, Nevada. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 19, at 3:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Bakersfield, at 4600 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield.
