Richard was born on June 24, 1934, in Coalinga, California to Frank and Goldie Odell and was the second to youngest of four children. Richard served in the United States Army and enjoyed great success within the petroleum industry. Earlier on in his career, in 1962, Richard was employed by Global Marine as a roughneck on a drill ship in Anchorage, Alaska where he met his loving wife and best friend, Margaret Ann--"Alaska Maggie" as he endearly called her. Richard was transformed by the birth of--and his love for--his four children. His work and his dreams of world travel sent him and his family overseas for 17 years where they resided in various countries and cities across this globe. Upon the Odell family's return to the United States in 1981, Richard positioned his family in Bakersfield, California where he eventually retired with Occidental Petroleum in 1999. Within that time, with his wife by his side, Richard was an integral part of his children's success, a surrogate father to their friends, and was blessed by the arrival of his three beautiful grandchildren. Richard had an incredible love and enthusiasm for his life, family, friends and work and will always be loved and deeply missed by all those who knew him. Richard was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Terry Odell and is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann; his children, Shari Odell, Kathy Collom, Steve Odell, and Danny and Amy Odell; his grandchildren, Lori, Saron, and Katrina Collom; his sisters, Dorothy Sullivan and Molly Sherman; and numerous nieces and nephews. All those who wish to remember Richard Odell are invited to attend a celebration of his life at St. Philips on Stockdale Highway, Friday, January 27th, at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Cornelia DeLange Foundation or St. Judes Hospital for Children.
