Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Friday, December 23, 2005, at 9 a.m. Father Craig Harrison will officiate and Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Martha was born May 9, 1958, in Bakersfield, California, to Jess and Irene Ortiz. She attended Arvin Elementary and Arvin High School. Martha received her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Humboldt State University and went on to obtain her Masters from Cal State University in Counseling. Martha was a cheerful woman, who loved people and loved to laugh. She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping. Martha was very proud of her family and loved to brag about them. She was a very giving woman, who truly cared for others. She enjoyed music, loved her dog "Toby" and loved the color purple. Her enjoyment and fulfillment came from helping people and working with students at Centennial High. Martha was a good friend. She also was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Jr. Assistance League of Bakersfield in high school, and Board of Kern County Alzheimer's Association. Martha is survived by her father, Jess Ortiz, Sr.; fiancé, Jim Katz of Bakersfield; siblings, Mary Ortiz of Arvin, Jess Ortiz, Jr. and wife, Evangelina of Arvin; Joann Bergholdt and husband, Robert of Bakersfield; Martin Ortiz and wife, Nora of Bakersfield and Mark Ortiz and wife, Sabrina of Arvin; nieces and nephews, Bryan, Julian, Alexandra, Karyn, Veronica, Ian, and Spencer; Aunt Rachel Torosian and husband, Ted of Fresno; her loving dog and baby Toby; and numerous cousins and friends. Martha is predeceased by her mother, Irene. At Marthas request, we invite all mourners to wear purple. In addition to sending flowers, you may also make donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
