He later did postgraduate study at Stanford and San Diego State University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, first as an Instructor and later as a Navigator in the Pacific. After the war he moved to Bakersfield to begin teaching at Bakersfield High School. He taught math at Bakersfield High for thirty-five years where he was also an advisor to the California Scholarship Federation. George met his wife at Bakersfield High School, where she was also a teacher. They married in 1947. They were married for 58 years and lived 51 of those years in the house that George designed and built. They then lived in Glenwood Gardens for a year before moving to Ukiah to be closer to their son, John. He enjoyed gardening and grew both fruit trees and a large vegetable garden in Bakersfield. Camping and fishing in the Sierras were favorite activities. George enjoyed traveling and he and his wife visited 65 countries on five continents over the years. George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Etta and his sister, Ruth Curtis. George is survived by his wife, Ellen; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Ted Hood; his brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Helen Sue; and his sons, Roger and wife, Kate and John and wife, Sandra.
