Oglesby Service: Mon., Apr. 18, 2005 A Celebration of Life for John Oglesby will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street, Bakersfield. John passed away peacefully at home on April 12th, following a long struggle with congestive heart failure. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. John was born on November 16, 1923, to Mavis and John H. Oglesby in Taft, CA, but soon after, the family moved to Greenville, Mississippi. At eighteen, John enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a Radarman aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans. His ship was involved in many important battles in the South Pacific during WWII. He was recalled during the Korean War and again honorably served his country. John returned from the service, and attended Bakersfield College, where he met his loving wife of 51 years, Leona. He furthered his education at U.C. Davis where he earned a degree in Agronomy and a Masters Degree in Education. After graduation, John began his teaching career at Bakersfield College. He taught in the Agriculture Dept. from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He continued to remain active in the ag industry for many years through his consulting in Agronomy & Entomology. One of Mr. Oglesbys greatest sense of accomplishments was seeing his many former students succeed in the industry and in their personal lives. John loved sports and was an avid BC Renegade Fan. He was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church since 1962. His church family, card groups and many lifelong friends were very important to him. John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Leona, his parents, as well as brother, Robert L. Oglesby. He is survived by his children and their families, Liz and Mike Ruder (John-Michael and Jenna); Susi Klassen (Erik and Kimberly Klassen and Markus Hubbard) and son-in-law, Walter Hubbard; Tom and Darla Oglesby (Jennifer, Melissa and John); and his special daughter, Leeza White and husband, Norman of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his siblings, Eva Pendley, Willie and Richard Snydal, Kathleen and Joe Evans, Lorene Oglesby, his brother, Charles Oglesby; his many Durr relatives and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Optimal Hospice of Bakersfield or Northminster Presbyterian Church.
