Owen Services: Mon., May 9, 3:00 p.m. Robert F. Owen was born in Moline, Illinois, on December 21, 1917. His childhood years were spent learning the bakery business from his hard-working, close knit Czech Family. In 1942, Bob joined the Naval Aviation program and flew antisubmarine aircraft over the Atlantic. After his release to inactive duty, he was employed by Peak Oilfield Services in Taft, CA, where he met and married Geneva, his wife of 50 years. During the Korean War, he was recalled to active duty, and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida, then Honolulu, where he flew transport planes in the Pacific. In 1958, after being honorably discharged, he and Geneva moved to Anaheim, CA where Bob was employed as a technical writer for Douglas Aircraft. It was here that Bob and Geneva became avid Angels fans and fell in love with beagles. They also started studying the art of oil painting which turned into a lifelong passion and business for them. They relocated to Bakersfield, opened the downtown Art Shop. Bob supplemented the fledgling business by working as a crop duster. Bob continued to keep in touch with his military friends through M.O.A., the Military Officers Association. Hundreds of people have studied oil painting at Bobs shop. After Genevas death in 2003, Bob continued to operate the shop by himself, surrounded by the love and support of his longtime students and friends. What fond memories we all have of entering that shop and slipping into another place and space. The smell of paint, the laughter of friends and the sound of the oldies music that Bob so dearly loved will stay in our hearts forever. We will miss this gracious, generous and kind man, who always had a positive attitude despite his declining health, diminishing eyesight and general aches and pains of an 87 year old. In memory of Bob and Geneva, the art students will continue to meet each week at the Art Shop for painting and fellowship. A memorial service will be Monday, May 9th, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street, at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
