She was 29 and would have celebrated her 30th birthday on December 20, 2005. A memorial service and funeral will be held at 2 p.m. with Bishop Harold Pease of the Taft Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. A dinner will follow. A second service will be held next Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in Healdsburg where she grew up. Gravesite dedication will follow at the Oak Mound Cemetery. Simply known as Lii (pronounced Lee- ee), she battled her disease the same way she lived, with courage and dignity. She was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare bone and muscle cancer in her left scapula, just before the volleyball season began last year. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments before undergoing surgery to replace her shoulder. The cancer later reappeared in her lungs. She leaves voids at both Taft College and California State University Bakersfield where she taught composition and tutored. For the last seven years Lii also served as assistant volleyball coach at Taft College for her sister, Kanoe Bandy, and helped guide the Cougars to a fourth place finish in last years state championships. Although she never played college volleyball, Lii learned the intricacies of the game and was a catalyst in helping her sister become national coach of the year last season. At Cal State, she directed a program that worked with middle school students in Arvin, was coordinator of English tutoring services for all disciplines and taught freshman composition courses. She was highly respected and admired by her peers and students at both schools. Lii is recognized as a generous, giving person who lived life as it was intended, someone who touched all who knew her. She graduated from Taft College and earned her Bachelors and Masters Degree in English from Cal State Bakersfield. She was active in the Taft LDS Church, loved to read, attend live theater productions, and watch movies. Lii was born Dec. 20, 1975, in Santa Rosa, CA, graduating from Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa. She took a year off from school to assist her mother who was an exchange teacher in the Henan Province in China. She is survived by her parents, Delbert and Flora Pearl of Healdsburg; siblings, Lokelani Pearl-Webb, Keanaina Pearl, Kanoe Pearl Bandy, and Kamana Pearl; sister-in-law, Dana Hammer Pearl; brothers-in-law, Donald Bandy and Gerard Webb; nieces and nephews, Mahealani Pearl, Stewart Bandy, Kaleo Pearl, Mele Pearl, Alakai Pearl, Aukai Pearl, Lyons Pearl, Roman Pearl, Kaipo Pearl, and Shelby Pearl; and her beloved cat Lennie. Viewing will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Erickson and Brown Funeral Home, 501 Lucard Street, in Taft. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 10/13/2005.
