Visitation begins Saturday, 3:00-9:00 p.m., at Greenlawn Mortuary. Grace was born on June 29, 1922, in Del Rio, Texas and has resided in Bakersfield since 1945. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Garza; parents, Juan and Ysidra Pena; brothers, Gus and Armando Pena. She is survived by her children, JoAnn Navarro, JoElda Gomez, Joyce Garza, Arthur Garza Jr. and wife, JoAnn and Danny Garza; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Maria (Lollie) Ortiz and Gloria DeLaCerda of San Jose, California. Mrs. Garza retired from the University of California in 1980. She was a Nutrition Aide, helping homemakers in the Bakersfield and Tehachapi area. After retirement, she was a community volunteer at the Senior Center for Progress on Baker St., Mt. Vernon Senior Center, Rasmussen Center and the East Niles Senior Center. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 682. Served as 2nd Vice and Sergeant of Arms. Grace was also a member of the Comite de Beneficencia #6-Pro Treasurer, Socidad Juarez M.M., Edad De Oro 12 and Loma Council. She was a volunteer at the Food Bank food giveaway once a month. Grace was a member of a Mexican Folklorico Dance group directed by Connie Nieto, which she enjoyed very much. Grace has received numerous certificates and awards for the many hours she gave. She always liked to meet new friends and was always giving and helping others. She was a hostess on trips to Eagle Mountain. With all the things she has done she always had time for her family. Mom, we thank you for your love and guidance, you have always been there for us when we needed you. You are truly the best mom and grandmother in the whole world. All your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss you dearly. Pallbearers will be Johnny Luevano Jr., Tony Luevano, Eric Navarro, Danny Pimienta, Arthur Garza III, Anthony Luevano and Danny Garza Jr. Special Thanks to the San Joaquin I.C.U. Staff, Dr. Claiborne, Dr. Anders, Dr. Sam Singh and Dr. Shambaugh for their support and heartfelt care. And in lieu of flowers, please make donations made to San Clemente Church.
