Cooley, Jr. Funeral Service, 1100 Chester Ave. Funeral services are being held January 31, 2006, at St. John Baptist Church, 1300 E. Brundage Lane, 11:00 a.m., interment at Union Cemetery. Vernon Leon Perry was born January 15, 1945, in Bakersfield, California, to the union of Melvin Perry and Cordie Mae Stephens. He was the oldest of two children. In the early years of his life he attended Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of the late Elder Ruben Meeks and recently rededicated his life to Christ. He attended Potomac and McKinley Elementary Schools, Compton Junior High School, and Bakersfield High School. Leon was a Veteran of the Vietnam Era and served his country from October 28, 1965 to October 27, 1967. He lived in Bakersfield all of his life and he never met a stranger. He was employed by the City of Bakersfield Solid Waste Division in the Public Works Department from October 4, 1974, until January 21, 2000. His happy, outgoing personality gained him many kind and devoted friends. He passed away at home with his devoted wife, Linda and other family members at his bedside. Leon was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Perry; his uncle, Fred McCowan; and his aunt, Cindy McCowan. Leon leaves to celebrate his homegoing his devoted wife of forty-years, Linda Perry; one son, Eric Cherry and his wife, Tina of Bakersfield, CA; two daughters, Yvette Gash and her husband, Wilfred and La- Shawnda Perry of Bakersfield, CA; four grandsons, Tony, Eric Jr., Tracy, and Ethan of Bakersfield, CA; two granddaughters, Tatyana and Tamera of Bakersfield; mother, Cordie Mae Stephens of Bakersfield, CA; one brother, Eugene Larry Lane of Bakersfield, CA; mother-in-law, Ceola Herring of Bakersfield, CA; one uncle, Jarel Grimes of Bakersfield, CA; six aunts, Irene Grimes, Jean Moore, Josephine McCowan, Ernestine Neal, and Viola Davis of Bakersfield, CA; Lillie Mae Smith of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
