One of five children raised in the Smokey Mountains of Virginia, he enlisted in the United States Army as a young man. Stationed first in Korea, followed by two tours of Vietnam, Jim spent time in Germany, France, as well as many bases in the United States. Sergeant First Class Poff concluded his distinguished military career after 21 years of service. Jim met his beloved wife, Lucy in 1982 in Bakersfield, California where he resided until his passing. A hard worker, Jim started and successfully operated his own paint contracting company, Poff Painting & Design for 13 years. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Lucy and her children whom he treated as his own, Teresa and James Torres of Bakersfield, CA, Susan and Chuck Moran of Hanford, CA, Error! Bookmark not defined. and Kevin Shanahan of San Francisco, CA and son-in-law, Mike Pilatti, also of Bakersfield. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jaime, Erick, Jacob, Elisabeth and Cece Torres, Nancy and Rob Pence, Larisa and Michael Pilatti, Laura and Curt Yeager, Jackie Pilatti, C.J. and Kristen Moran; great-grandchildren, Makayla Yeager and Mikey V. Pilatti. Jim is survived by his mother-in-law, Thelma Horton; brother-in-law, GM (Red) Horton and wife, Lori; sister-in-law, Elsie Fannin; sisters, Fay and husband, Kenneth Worley, Ruth and husband, Bill Fisher, Evelyn and husband, Bob Turner; brother, Charles Poff and wife, Charlotte. Jim is preceded in death by his beautiful step-daughter, Cheryl Pilatti and parents, Lena Mae and Kelly Poff. Jim loved his grandchildren, traveling with his wife, the game of golf, a good Bar-B-Que, his Labrador Retriever, Bubba, and above the pride he had in his garden, appreciated time with family and friends telling stories of his lifetime adventures. Jim, a man of integrity, was very generous in life with his wife, family, and everyone whom he met. Underneath his firm personality was a very loving heart. Jim will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held Friday, December 9, 2005, at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, on Panama Lane, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Chapel and graveside services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. Published in the Bakersfield Californian from 12/8/2005 - 12/10/2005.
