She was born June 29, 1923 in Henrietta, Oklahoma to Harry and Hattie Hughes. Bessie came to California with her parents in 1925, living in McFarland for most of her life. Her early years were spent with her family involved in farm life. She met and married a school friend and neighbor boy, Herman Charles Poulton, in 1937. They had two sons, Carl and Clifford. They also had a daughter, Phyllis, who died in infancy. Herman hauled hay for many years, with Bessie upholding her end of the partnership by bringing to the field a home-cooked noontime meal and iced-tea every day. She and Herman shared a passion for fishing, especially the streams in the Sierras. In later years they haunted antique auctions, shops, and junk yards looking for what they called treasures. They shared 52 wonderful years together before his death in 1990. Bessies greatest loves were her family and home. She possessed a wonderfully dry sense of humor which emerged when least expected. She planted and tended beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetable gardens. She was a talented crafts-person and great cook. She loved having her family around her, especially her granddaughter Mindy with whom she shared a special relationship. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
